Who could have thought a movie about a wheel chair bound photographer confined to his living room could be so riveting. Sure it helps that the photographer is James Stewart and that he receives frequent visits from Grace Kelly and his genuinely hilarious caretaker, but even so it always amazes me how much Hitchcock does with so little. Not only do we get the murder mystery involving a missing woman and her aggressive (looking) husband from across the apartment complex, but we are treated to slew of other stories involving the colorful neighbors that are too busy living their own lives to notice anything might be amiss. The movie does a good job of building tension as we’re lead to believe first that foul play is a given and then, not quite successfully, that maybe our main characters are simply over reacting. Things never get too gruesome, but there are plenty of moments to make your hair stand on end. It all culminates in a truly harrowing climax that both keeps you on the edge of your seat and might leave you with an unintended laugh or two. A bonafide classic, Rear Window is probably my favorite Hitchcock film (though Birds is pretty up there) and a move everyone should see at least once if they haven’t already. Can’t go wrong with a cast like this, even if horror flicks aren’t really your thing.
